Our story opens at Christmastime in Victorian England. While many are scrounging for work, others are shopping and preparing for a joyful holiday. A young girl whose mother has been dead since she was a toddler, lives alone with her father Jeb Maklin. Jeb turned to drink after the death of his wife, leaving his now 13-year-old daughter to fend for herself by selling matches on the streets of London. Hardly any of the passersby have the time or interest to buy matches on Christmas Eve, but she is brave and holds on to hope for a better life for herself.
Each time the girl lights a match, she looks into a magical world … the world of her imagination! She makes friends and falls in love, but in the end, nobody can help the girl find a warm hearth to rest her head and save her from the harsh winter. Will the girl be able to find the warm, loving home she so desperately craves, or will she remain alone on the streets of London, helpless and desperately searching for her father’s love on the cold winter’s night?
